From unprecedented heat waves to severe flash floods to extended droughts, the weather events of 2026 have underscored that climate change is already having a real effect on health around the world. Early warnings allow society to plan and adapt to these increasingly extreme events, but access to reliable and valuable forecasts is often lacking in the places that need it most. Artificial intelligence is enabling a rapid revolution in weather by making forecasts more accurate and less costly to produce, particularly for developing economies that face some of the most severe impacts from climate change. But better forecasts alone don’t automatically translate into improved outcomes for people–or for health. Different actors–from public health systems, to doctors, to individuals–need weather information on varying time scales in order to make more informed decisions about health risks and solutions.

Hosted by The Rockefeller Foundation and the University of Chicago Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, this event brings together practitioners and researchers across global health, weather forecasting, artificial intelligence, and philanthropy to showcase and discuss opportunities for harnessing the power of improved weather forecasts to save lives and improve health. A cornerstone of this will be the launch of a report that collects insights from experts in AI weather forecasting, public health, and climate and social science and provides a roadmap for advancing human-centered weather forecasts for health care and public health.
